Frequently Asked Questions

When will the internship take place?

The internship program will start on July 1st 2021 and will go for eight weeks.

Which activities are planned during the internship period?

Next to the mandatory project work, all interns need to participate in the scientific program including internship symposium, seminars, lab meetings and institute events. Moreover, the on-site interns will be invited to join all the social activities of their group during the internship. In general, the epigenetics@HMGU will organize different social events in the virtual setting to foster the interactivity between the on-site and virtual interns.

Will accommodation be provided?

This year we will not provide accommodation for the on-site interns. Interns coming to Munich will get supported for their flat search if needed (e.g. location advice, German translation).

Is health insurance provided?

No, successful applicants must provide their own health insurance for the duration of the internship.

Is it a paid internship?

No, our summer internship program is not a paid internship. However, we will contribute to costs for travelling, living expenses, and rent with an expense allowance.

Why do the virtual interns don't get an expense allowance?

Virtual internship do not require additional costs for travelling, living expenses and rent.

Why do I need to write a cover letter?

The cover letter is an important part of the application process as it allows you to tell us your motivations towards scientific research and for taking part in the internship. The cover letter is read carefully during the selection process in addition to the transcripts submitted with your application.

What documents do I need to submit?

Please, go to the 'Required documents' section. There you can find the full list.

I forgot to upload all the requested documents. Can I add them after submitting my initial application?

Documents cannot be added to the online application system once the initial application has been submitted. Please take care to upload all documents in the first submission. Since all applications need to go through the application system, applications send via mail after the system is closed cannot be accepted.

Can applications be accepted beyond the deadline?

All applications must be made via our online application system and therefore we are unable to accept applications made after the closing date.

Why do I need to combine all documents in one pdf file?

This makes the review process faster and more straightforward. Moreover, it gives a more comprehensive overview of your application.

Do I get a certificate after completing the summer internship for my university studies?

Yes. If you have successfully finished your summer internship (documentation of project work, presentation of the project during the symposium), then you get a certificate for your participation in the summer internship. In case, your university does not accept this certificate, please contact the coordinator to solve this program.

How to generate a combined pdf?

There are free tools available to generate combined PDF files. There you can upload your individual PDFs and the tool generates a combined PDF.

How to fill our the project preference list?

Download the Project Preference List here. Then open it using a PDF reader. Select three projects and rank them from 1 to 3 according to your preference (1 is the highest). Save the file in your application documents folder. Before you upload all the documents to the online system, combine them in one PDF file.

In case you cannot edit the interactive pdf, you can also print it and fill it out by hand or you label it on your PC/laptop/tablet/phone. How you fill out the list is not important, only that you do it.
