Functional Metabolomics

Since the composition of small molecules can reflect functional activities, stable and transient effects, as well as endpoints of biological processes, metabolomics opens a new window for the research on molecular processes in biological systems. In functional metabolomics, we apply targeted and non-targeted metabolomics to investigate physiological and pathological processes connected to metabolic diseases like type-2 diabetes and obesity. We also elucidate the mechanisms of actions of drugs that are frequently administered to treat those diseases. Our analyses are mostly based on cell culture, but we also characterize mouse models of diabetes and obesity applying metabolomics to tissues and body fluids. Besides working on the aforementioned research aspects, we continuously support the development and establishment of new assays to expand the metabolite portfolio of the Metabolomic Platform.
