The HDC

The Helmholtz Diabetes Center

The ultimate goal of HDC is to improve the quality of life of diabetic patients and significantly decrease diabetes-related mortality rates in affected subjects. We aim to:

  • Reduce the number of children developing type 1 diabetes by creating a platform and program to introduce randomized controlled trials for the prevention of type 1 diabetes
  • Discover and develop novel effective, safe and sustainable options for obesity-related type 2 diabetes and its long-term complications, including atherosclerosis and tumor-induced metabolic dysfunction
  • Develop new treatment options through stem cells and regenerative therapies in type 1 and type 2 patients
  • Understand the epigenetic mechanisms involved in the development of diabetes as a basis for preventing and reverting disease-associated epigenetic processes
