Matthias Blüher is one of the leading endocrinologists and diabetologists on the field of obesity research. He is the spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1052 “Obesity Mechanisms”, Senior Physician at the Department of Medicine (Endocrinology) and Head of Obesity Outpatient Clinics for Adults at the University Hospital Leipzig. He serves as a board member of the German Obesity Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

Matthias Blüher´s research focusses on the role of adipose tissue in diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. He is particularly interested in the question how fat distribution and signals from adipose tissue influence the function of other organs. In clinical research projects, his research group will examine the interaction between biological and environmental factors causing the current worldwide increase in obesity.

The research focus of the HI-MAG is to uncover the molecular underpinnings of adipose tissue dysfunction, of metabolic processes and vascular disturbances using a clinical translational approach to enable precision therapies for obesity and its co-morbidities.
