Doctoral degree at the universities

The Helmholtz Research School of Radiation Sciences – RS2 operates within the Graduate School Environmental Health – HELENA. HELENA is a joint initiative for the promotion of graduate students of the Helmholtz Zentrum München - German Research Center for Environmental Health, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and the Technische Universität München (TUM).

Graduate students at Helmholtz Zentrum München have three-year working contracts and are fully integrated into international research projects. They will usually receive their doctoral degree from one of the Munich universities (LMU or TUM). The award of Dr. rer. nat. or PhD is possible, dependent upon the University and the entry pathway. Awards may be made by the faculties of Medicine or of one of the other life science faculties. Strong networking between Helmholtz Zentrum München and the two Munich universities is ensured through joint appointments as well as through joint centers for translational medicine and numerous interdisciplinary research projects.

After completing your work for your doctoral degree at the DRS and the RS2 curriculum, your efforts will be rewarded through:

  • The Doctoral Degree from the University
  • The “Helmholtz Research School of Radiation Sciences / HELENA” Certificate

After successful completion of the RS2 curriculum and successful defense of the doctoral thesis at the university, RS2 students are eligible to receive the combined RS2 / HELENA Certificate in accordance with the partner universities.
