Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research

The Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (Helmholtz-Institut für Metabolismus-, Adipositas- und Gefäßforschung, HI-MAG), aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms how adipose tissue dysfunction contributes to the development of metabolic and vascular diseases. HI-MAG uses a translational approaches and human studies and biobanks to facilitate the development of precision therapies for obesity and its metabolic and vascular co-morbidities.

HI-MAG is an institute of the Helmholtz Zentrum München located at the University of Leipzig, tightly integrated into the Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC). It is one of eleven unique Helmholtz Institutes within the Helmholtz Association, forming a strategic, long term partnership between the Helmholtz Zentrum München, the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig and the University Hospital Leipzig.

Obesity represents one of the major health burdens of our society. An effective obesity treatment can prevent or delay metabolic and vascular comorbidities. Until now, obesity treatments are either not effective or not available to the majority of affected people. Development of novel etiology-based strategies for the prevention and treatment of obesity require a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms causing obesity and linking it to metabolic and vascular disorders.

Therefore, HI-MAG focusses on the following main research areas:

1. Molecular mechanisms of adipose tissue dysfunction in obesity

2. Target identification and validation for future obesity pharmacotherapy

3. Development of novel vascular drug delivery systems for personalized peripheral arterial restenosis prevention.

During a build-up phase until 2021, HI-MAG will progress research activities along the three profile research areas: obesity, metabolic and vascular research by appointing professors research and junior research group leaders for each research area. Technology platforms and core units of HMGU and the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig will support HI-MAG research.

HI-MAG seeks for talented and enthusiastic researchers with a specific interest in obesity, metabolism and vasculature research as well as research assistants. Please look for open positions here.
