Biomaterial and Registries

The Leipzig Obesity BioBank collects biomaterial including blood, adipose tissue, liver, skeletal muscle, stomach, intestine and other tissues from donors with a wide range of age, body weight, fat distribution and obesity-related diseases. Biomaterial has been selected strictly adhering to the good clinical practice standards and after donors gave their written informed consent to use these samples for research purposes.The Leipzig Obesity BioBank has been approved by the local ethics committee (Reg. Nos. 031-2006; 017-12-23012012; 159/12-ek) and follows the Declaration of Helsinki, the Bioethics Convention (Oviedo), and EU Directive on Clinical Trials (Directive 2001/20/EC). Ethical guidelines and EU legislation for privacy and confidentiality in personal data collection and processing is being followed, in particular directive 95/46/EC. The Department of Medicine, University of Leipzig has extensive experience in conducting clinical trials, and routines for data collection, storage, protection, retention and destruction are well implemented.
