Study on Impact of Oestrogen and Testosterone

This study is a joint project of the HI-MAG, the University of Leipzig and the University Hospital Leipzig.

What is the aim of the study?

The impact of oestrogen and testosterone on eating behaviour, metabolism, sensors and the cardiovascular system are widely unkown. In this study the effects of a therapy with the hormones of the opposite sex on a group of transgender people will be examined. The same examinations will be made paralell with a control group who is not undergoing hormone therapy. Currently we are looking for participants of the control group.

Who may participate?

  • men and woman between the ages of 18 and 69

The following are disqualifying factors:

  • severe illnesses, such as cancer, heart-, kidney- or liver diseases, severe depression etc.
  • pregnancy or lactation
  • addiction, such as alcohol and drugs
  • participation in other studies, during which other drugs are examined or other interventions take place

What will happen during the study?

You will undergo the following examinations:

  • determination of body measurements (weight, height) and vital parameters (blood pressure, temperature etc.)
  • blood taking
  • measurement of fat and muscle mass ( bioimpedance analysis)
  • measurement of metabolic rates by indirect calorimetry
  • measurement of sense of taste
  • measurement of temperature sensitivity
  • measurement of sensaton of hunger before and after a meal
  • psychological questionnaire
  • examination of the throat and stomach bacteria by using ultrasound and measurement of blood circulation in your fingers

All the details of the examinations will be explained to you in a detailed pre-treatment-interview before the study starts.

How long does it take to participate in the study and will there be a remuneration?

You will take part in seven examinations. After the initial measurement day the identical measurments will be repeated after three, six and 12 months as well as after 2 and 5 years. One day of examinations will take ca. 7 hours. Apart from an extensive medical check-up you will receive 50,-€ expense allowance.
