About IAF

  • The research of The Institute of Allergy Research (IAF) is focused on the understanding of mechanisms involved in the development of allergies and allergen tolerance in the context of genetic predisposition, immune system and environmental factors. As part of the Center of Allergy & Environment (ZAUM) the IAF conducts applied, clinical and basic research. The aim of the research is to understand the mechanisms of allergic diseases, to assess risks for the onset of allergy as well as to develop novel strategies for prevention und therapy. 

    The Center for Allergy & Environment (ZAUM) in Munich is a hybrid institution build by the IAF at the Helmholtz Zentrum Munich and the chair of Molecular Allergology of the School of Medicine, Technical University of Munich. This link of governmental research and university medicine, which is unique in the German research landscape, serves the interdisciplinary basic research and builds a link to the clinic and clinical studies. This translational approach enables new insights into molecular mechanisms of allergies and their translation into new strategies for their prevention and patient-tailored therapy.

Highlights

20. April 2018: ZAUM built the world-wide first Pollen Indikator

The Pollen Indikator shows on-line the most recent pollen flight in Munich with a 3hrs lag-time. Two novelties lead to this Indikator: 1. Bavaria is world-wide the first state that implemented a network of 8 robotic pollen monitors that by image reckognition determine how many pollen are in the air, and puts this data free for all on-line to download. 2. The Pollen Indicator connects to the pollen robot in Munich and displays the concentrations of different pollen currently in the air in Munich. Vertically the expected level of symptoms is displayed (for those allergic to this pollen), horizontally the exact concentration of airborne pollen is displayed.

ZAUM expects that with this Pollen Indicator Bavarian Citizens are enabled to better cope with their allergic diseases, and to create awareness by delivering actual pollen counts.

05. Dezember 2017: Researchers at IAF obtain funding for research on type 2 inflammation

Julia Esser-von Bieren (see research portrait) and Caspar Ohnmacht (see research potrait) will participate in the new DFG research unit “Tissue Type 2 Responses: Mechanisms of Induction and Regulation” (link to article)

20. September 2017: New Helmholtz Young Investigator group “Innate Immunomodulation” at IAF

Macrophages are key cells of the innate immune response against infections, but their roles in allergy and other type 2 inflammatory diseases are poorly understood. With her research team, Julia Esser-von Bieren wants to shed new light on how macrophages are reprogrammed during allergic inflammation. In the recent competitive call for Helmholtz Young Investigator (HYI) groups, Julia Esser-von Bieren’s proposal was selected as one of the 15 new research groups that will be funded during a six year period. The HYI funding will allow Esser-von Bieren’s team to perform cutting edge research on “Macrophage reprogramming in type 2 inflammation”. By exploring mechanisms behind the pro-inflammatory roles of macrophages and developing new strategies to reprogram these cells, the HYI group aims to innovate the therapy of allergy and related diseases.
