Prof. Ntziachristos receives Gold Medal Award of the WMIS

The World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS) has named Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos as the winner of this year’s Gold Medal Award for his achievements in the field of molecular imaging. Prof. Ntziachristos, who is the Director of the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at the Helmholtz Zentrum München, will accept the award during the eighth WMIS congress to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, in early September.

The jury voted unanimously to award the prize to Prof. Ntziachristos in acknowledgment of “his pioneering work in the field of optical molecular imaging, providing solutions for deep tissue imaging, advancing quantitative and biologically specific interrogation of living systems.” The committee also praised the contribution made by the professor towards improving this method for in vivo diagnosis in humans.

After studying Electrotechnology in Thessaloniki and obtaining a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Vasilis Ntziachristos took up an Assistant Professor position at Harvard University. In 2007 he accepted a joint appointment as Director of the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging at the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) and Professor of Biological Imaging at the Technical University of Munich (TU München).

Prof. Ntziachristos has already received numerous awards and accolades. These include the Erwin Schrödinger Prize presented in 2011 by the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and the Humanities in Germany (SDW), a Reinhart Koselleck Project funding granted by the German Research Association (DFG) in 2012, and the Leibniz Prize awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2013. “In the future we will continue to try to improve methods of non-invasive medical imaging for the benefit of patients,” Prof. Ntziachristos commented.
