Molecular Neuroimaging


Our efforts to understand complex cellular networks such as those that make up our brains are greatly aided by in vivo measurement methods that can resolve cellular activity at the molecular level across entire organs of intact subjects. The research group Molecular Neuroimaging is thus focused on developing molecule-specific and responsive contrast agents that translate key cellular events to dynamic signals, which can be read out by non-invasive imaging technology such as Magnetic Resonance. These molecular contrast agent sensors are fabricated through genetic and protein engineering, chemistry and nanotechnological methods. They are then validated in vivo via multimodal imaging approaches in close collaboration with the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging and the University Hospital of Technische Universität München. In conjunction with high-resolution fMRI and advanced optical methods we employ these responsive neuroimaging agents to study neuronal network function in rodent models of neuropsychiatric disease.
