Effects of technical systems on the quality of life of people with type 1 diabetes (TeQfor1)

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition. For those who are affected it is associate with constant self-control, harmful hyper- and hypoglycemia as well as potential long-term complications. Even with the help of modern technology type 1 diabetes is hard to control. A group of persons affected came together to provide a self-developed technology for automated insulin delivery. These so-called artificial pancreas systems or (hybrid) closed loop systems are more effective than commercial technologies but are not clinically approved. TeQfor1 is a so called “citizen science” project where persons with type 1 diabetes have the opportunity to systematically examine to what extent these do-it-yourself systems actually influence their quality of life and whether or how their blood glucose levels ​​change. Project partners are the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) of the Helmholtz Zentrum Munich - German Research Center for Health and Environment  as well as the GECKO Institute for Medicine, Computer Science and Economics at Heilbronn University. Prof. Andreas Fritsche and scientists of the IDM will retrospectively analyze data provided by 80 – 100 persons with type 1 diabetes under the leadership of these affected persons who will also define the relevant endpoints. Furthermore, narrative reports will be created that describe life with closed loop systems and advantages and disadvantages of the systems. Academic researchers will only support patients in defining scientific issues and give advice which parameters are necessary to answer predefined questions. This project has two objectives

  • TeQfor1 is a so called “citizen science” project for patients with type 1 diabetes who use self-developed technology  for automated insulin delivery.
  • The citizen scientists have the opportunity to examine systematically  to what extent these artificial pancreas systems or (hybrid) closed loop systems influence their quality of life or their blood glucose levels with support of experienced scientists.

 

Project Supervisor

This is a citizen science project. The research project is carried out by interested patients with type 1 diabetes. So there is no “principle investigator”.
