Beta cell heterogeneity impact on pathogenesis and progression of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D)

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is the autoimmune-mediated form of diabetes mellitus (DM) that accounts for 5-10% of all cases of DM. The disease at onset affects mostly children and determines an absolute necessity of insulin therapy due to the destruction of the pancreatic beta cell mass. In this project we would like to investigate whether the subpopulations observed among beta cells, using the novel marker Fltp, has an impact on the pathogenesis and progression of the disease. In order to do this, we will generate a transgenic mouse model (NOD-FltpZV/+), and in collaboration with partners from the Immunology department, we will try to isolate and characterize a possible immunological-resistant beta cell subpopulation.
