An overarching objective of HMGU and IEG is to enhance knowledge transfer from basic research into strategies that improve diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of human diseases in translational research approaches. The collaboration with clinical partners at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) and Technische Universität München (TUM) is therefore essential. To foster and develop further existing joint research projects in the metabolism and diabetes field, HMGU, TUM, and LMU have established the Virtual Institute of Diabetes Research (VID) several years ago, out of which two Clinical Cooperation Groups (CCG) have developed: ‘Subclassification of type 2 diabetes’ (HMGU and LMU), and ‘Nutrigenomics and type 2 diabetes’. In the former, scientists from LMU and HMGU aim to clarify mechanisms involved in the development of type 2 diabetes and identify targets/metabolic pathways to predict and prevent this progressive disease.
