Subclassification of Type 2 Diabetes

The CCG recruits normoglycemic individuals with a known risk for developing type 2 diabetes (e.g. women after gestational diabetes) and matched healthy individuals. All study participants undergo an extensive clinical characterisation (e.g. questionnaires, clinical examination, ergometer test). In addition, challenge tests for alpha/beta-cell function and insulin sensitivity and magnetic resonance imaging (distribution of body fat, intrahepatic and intramuscular lipids) are done. Samples (blood, plasma, DNA, RNA) are collected for further analyses (biomarkers, metabolomics, gene variants, epigenetics). The study has cross-sectional component and also incorporates longitudinal follow-up over several years.
