Sophie Hardy from CPC / ILBD wins Munich Half Marathon in fantastic time

Sophie Hardy; ILBD/CPC Helmholtz Zentrum München

Stamina! This seems to be one of Sophie Hardy’s special skills. For about half a year the belgian scientist has been living and working in Munich. In mid-October she started in her first Munich Half-Marathon. And this with enormous success: With a fabulous time of one hour, 16 minutes and 37 seconds she was the first to cross the finish line.

"Running is one of my true passions," says Hardy. "And the Munich Marathon was a fantastic experience - sunny weather, friendly atmosphere, top organization. I started running in 2010 and did not run any marathon yet. To finish the Munich half marathon in first place, with my personal record time, was fantastic."

Sophie Hardy, a medical doctor and physician scientist, is working at the CPC / ILBD since April 2018 as part of a one-year research program in the team of Silke Meiners’ Lab “Proteasome Function in Chronic Lung Disease”. She works on proteasome function in human sputum samples to validate whether proteasome activity profiling can be used as a potential biomarker approach to predict COPD severity and susceptibility to exacerbations. Her DAAD-funded research project at the CPC / ILBD is part of Sophie’s six-year specialization in pneumology at the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels, Belgium.

For her, stamina is not specific to running but part of every kind of sport. And to draw a parallel to science and research activities, she says: “Stamina - or, at least, focus and determination - are indeed needed. Research activities require endurance or stamina, which is a skill also helpful for anyone who wants to learn and progress in a sport.” The scientist also needed stamina or determination after the run - the three liters of wheat beer at the award ceremony were perhaps her biggest challenge on this day.
