Prof. Dr. Silke Meiners, Head of the Research Group “Proteasome Function in Chronic Lung Disease” at ILBD/CPC and Professor at the Ludwigs-Maximilian University has been elected as Secretary of Assembly 3 (Basic and Translational Sciences) of the European Respiratory Society (ERS)*. Her mandate will start on October 3, 2019 for three years.

Assembly 3 provides a platform for interaction between basic scientists and clinician scientists whose research is focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving lung diseases. A key effort of the Assembly is tracking scientific developments that translate into better diagnostic technologies and innovative therapeutic approaches. The Assembly organizes educational and scientific events at the annual ERS International Congress among them symposia, oral and poster presentation as well as Postdoc courses and networking events for early career researchers.
Meiners’ vision as an ERS Secretary is to strengthen and promote basic and translational lung science in the ERS. “We need to motivate more young basic scientists to spend their talent in lung research and actively participate in our assembly. They need to be supported to obtain research funding for their projects, to present their science and to actively participate in shaping the scientific program of the ERS. This support will give talented basic lung researchers a long-term perspective for excellent lung research within Europe”, Meiners said.

*The European Respiratory Society (ERS) organizes a range of scientific and educational events including the ERS International Congress, the largest conference in the respiratory field. Other events include courses, research seminars, and the annual the Lung Science Conference. The ERS produces a range of publications, like the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ), to promote knowledge and research in respiratory health. It offers activities from e-learning, interactive teaching and activities to harmonize education standards, alongside funding opportunities for fellowships, awards and grants.
