Rethinking the Genome: Epigenetics, Health and Society

An interdisciplinary panel discussion on the impact of epigenetics on the life sciences and society was held at the TUM on January 18th 2017, organized by the Professorship for Science and Technology Policy, Munich Center for Technology in Society & TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan, Technical University of Munich.  Opening statements by the panel revealed a wealth of knowledge and expertise in basic research, philosophy, humanities and social sciences and philosophy and highlighted interesting differences in the importance of epigenetics for different groups.  Furthermore, the panel demonstrated how important clear communication and understanding between different disciplines and the general public is to ensure the correct transmission of information and prevent the raising of “false hopes” with respect to medical advancements and curing diseases.
