The Analytical BioGeoChemistry (BGC) is an independent research unit of the Department of Environmental Sciences with a strong collaborative networking within environmental and health research at Helmholtz Zentrum München. BGC´s expertise in analytical chemistry (integrated high resolution μ-separation methods, (ultra)high resolution mass spectrometry and high field NMR-spectroscopy) and informatics for describing the chemical diversity of complex systems (metabolomics). Non-targeted and targeted metabolomics have been established at BGC already 2004 and since our goals are the description and understanding of systems on a molecular structural level with emphasis on discovery of new compounds and compound classes. The interdisciplinary projects at BGC focus on the structure elucidation of new biomarkers and bioactive compounds in microbial / viral interactions as well as in environmental and health-related microbiomes. Our exemplary internal networking is mirrored through our participation in national and international consortia BMBF-KKN and BMBF-DZD "Type-II Diabetes", FP7-SysVasc "cardiovascular polyOmics integration", FP7 ITN iMode "chronic kidney disease", DFG-SPP 1656 "Meta-metabolome in intestinal infection", DFG SPP 1617 "microanalytics/metabolomics in phenotypic heterogeneity", ERA-NET "Pathomics Clamydia and Pseudomonas infection model". Local regional interactions with the Universities are given at the Technische Universität München and the ZIEL (Zentralinstitut für Ernährung – und Lebensmittelwissenschaften) in the specific fields of food, microbiomes & inflammation.
