Vasilis Ntziachristos has been elected as a new member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. This esteemed recognition stands as one of the highest honors for scientists and is awarded through a thorough multi-stage selection process, highlighting outstanding scientific contributions.

Vasilis Ntziachristos is widely respected in the fields of biomedical engineering and molecular imaging. His recent inclusion in the Leopoldina acknowledges his research and impact on biomedical imaging and sensing techniques, with a focus on optoacoustic and fluorescence methods. Ntziachristos has pioneered optoacoustic imaging from basic principles to the ability that now globally leads biomedical research and human interrogations. The optoacoustic method combines light and ultrasound to deliver high-resolution optical visualization of tissue, breaking through the penetration barrier of optical microscopy. He has also advanced fluorescence systems and standardization methods to enable precise in vivo detection of fluorescent agents targeting specific molecular biomarkers. His research is geared towards shifting the paradigm in early disease detection, longitudinal monitoring of progression, and advancing precision interventional processes in cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other indications.

Vasilis Ntziachristos serves as the Director of the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging and the Head of the Bioengineering Center at Helmholtz Munich. Furthermore, he is a Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) holding the Chair for Biological Imaging. Throughout his career, Ntziachristos has been honored with numerous awards, including the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize and the esteemed Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. Recognized as a leading figure in biomedical imaging, he continues to make significant contributions to the development of new imaging technologies, benefiting both biomedical research and clinical practice.

Moreover, Ntziachristos has played an instrumental role in founding several companies, such as SurgVision BV, specializing in fluorescence imaging solutions for surgical applications, and iThera Medical GmbH, which focuses on commercializing optoacoustic technology, or sThesis GmbH, advancing biomedical sensing. His entrepreneurial endeavors are advancing the clinical translation of inventive photonic methods into tangible benefits for society.
